Madhatters!!!

PwC DnD 2004!!! A night of fun, laughter, food, and erm... Hats!!! Madhatter's Ball was the official name of our DnD, with the theme being hats of course! While it was a night to relax, let loose and have fun, to me and some of my friends, it was a sign that we've been in the company for a year already... an eventful year i might add.. but most importantly, we were all still together and doing fine!! Will we still be around this time next year??? It's a question that none of us can answer at the moment... :P

Anyway, knowing the theme, here are some of the pics..... true to the name of Madhatters!

"Rapper Zul and Cowboy Tim"

Cowboy Tim
This is the first time i'm wearing a hat like this, and i must say i look more like a tourist than a cowboy. Why would i call it a cowboy hat then? Coz Zul was the one who said he'd bring this for me and he promised it would be a Cowboy hat!! Well but then again, maybe i din have the outfit for it.

Zul's Punk Rapper Beanie
Definitely the best hat of the night amongst our group. I'm not even sure why the hell he would have bought a hat like this in the first place, but he says he bought it in Australia coz it looked cool and funky. I suspect he moonlights as a Rapper somewhere though. Cool head shape with irritatingly funky laces on the side.

"Britney-Spears-dancer Hazel"

Hazel "Britney" Lim
This is the Hazel from Hall 3, who's evidently just as haps as she always was in hall! Here her hat is part of her dance outfit, coz she and some other A1s did a dance number performance. I would have to say though, it does look very Britney-ish doesn't it? Girls these days.. haiz.... hahaha

"The cheeriest burglar around...."

Burglar Rey
The moment Rey put on my beanie, everyone started laughing. His round head and cheeky look made him out to be some sort of Burglar!! Knowing how committed and dedicated he is to everything he does, we shall all be worried then, if he one day decides to commit... BurglaREY.

"Smiley Ivy"

"French Cap" Ivy
One of the nicer hats i saw during the night! Blended really well with her entire outfit and i think she won over alot of fans with the LOOK... This is supposed to be a nicely posed pic but i think my weird beanie kinda ruins it a little.... although at least i get a bit of NZ nostalgia from this photo!! :P

"David Who? I mean Hew???"

Casual Dave
Ah hah!!! I was almost tempted to do the same!!! If you've run out of ideas for DnD hats, yet wanna be in line with the theme, the easiest thing to do would be to take the Cap way out!! PLUS it's an excuse to wear casual too.. if anyone asks, u can say its your OUTFIT!

"Big-mouth Gin"

Predator

Ok i know i was talking about people's hats but here i have to deviate a little. Looking at this photo, i think Qunwei really fits more into a movie theme than a hat theme. Why??? Coz he absolutely looks like Predator from the movies!! U know? The big scary dude who fought Arnold, Danny Glover (who the fug?) and tons of Aliens?? Without the mask of course.. i mean.. look at the size of his mouth....

Big Spender!!!

Oh well.... Singapore Idol came and went this week and our beloved Hall 3's Serene Koong sang the song title mentioned above. Thought she did pretty well, showing her excellent voice range, but the song wasn't an easy one to pull off on stage and the judges didn't take to her. A very good effort from her though, and even though she's not in the next round, she's still a Sassy Songbird to all of us from Hall 3!!!

Anyway, talking bout Big Spenders, i was just doing a reality check a moment ago, and realised i've been spending money like water the past week!!! Seems that i've been paying for lots of stuff which i'm not sure if i really need in the first place.... here's the lowdown on some of them...

1. Adidas Sala Street Soccer Shoes

"The new Sala. Brilliantly brilliant." Posted by Hello

- Price: $60 (after discount)
- Description: Shoes meant for street soccer. Reason for buying was the 25% discount at Stadium and the need for me to replace my old shoes.

Value-For-Money Rating (out of 10): 5
Yes, it's for replacing my worn out pair of Adidas', but knowing the fact that i am a Serial Shoe Killer and that my shoes last little more than 5 months each time, did i really need to pay $60??

2. K2 Inline Skates

"Hmmm.. don't they come in pairs?"

- Price: $185
- Description: With my sudden craze for Blading going out of control, getting a pair of these was inevitable. Managed to convince myself that i didn't need to pay more than $200 and these K2 blades are really REALLY comfy!

Value-For-Money Rating (out of 10): 6
I know what many of you are thinking... Blade 3 times only and now i go out and get myself a pair? Sounds like madness, but for myself i'm pretty sure i'm going to keep up with this sport for some time to come. With Sharon showing an interest too, it's gonna be more than just a passing phase! (I HOPE.)

3. Haircut at J-Salon

"Hairdo? Or Hairdon't? What say you?" Posted by Hello

- Price: $78 ($23 for cut, $55 for dye)
- Description: After the Golliwog debacle a few days ago, it was obvious i needed to do something. Anyway my hair was really getting long and frizzy and so it was back to the nice hairdresser aunty Annie at the J-Salon in Far East. Went for a dye too as my hair colour was getting a little boring.

Value-For-Money Rating (out of 10): 3
Well, there are many places that i could have cut my hair. (Even Qunwei's lousy $6 cut at CCK) But i really find that Annie is really good and knows her stuff, so i'm pretty loyal to her. However, does the haircut really matter when you already have a handsome face? Hmmm... Also could have dyed it myself... but din wanna get my hands dirty...

4. Parking Fine at East Coast!!!

"Sept 11 is never a good day..." Posted by Hello

- Price: $30
- Description: Went blading and then stopped by the hawker centre to eat. Reynold told me that i still needed to pay for parking as he spotted the sign at the entrance. However, I nonchalantly told him that i'm not that suay and we were only getting a drink. Turns out that we had 2 rounds of sugar cane, 1 plate of Lala, 1 rojak, almost 1 hour of rest time, and a visit from the summon aunty.

Value-For-Money Rating (out of 10): 0
What value can you ever find in a parking fine?!?!?!

*****************************************

As you can see, the song Big Spender was really written for people like me. As the start of the week beckons, i look at my wallet and the sight was shockingly familiar.

Golliwog!!!

Have you ever heard of a Golliwog? Have you ever seen a Golliwog? Do you even know what a Golliwog is??? Well for myself, i vaguely recall hearing or reading about it somewhere, but i really can't be sure.... Anyway why the sudden interest in Golliwogs you might ask?? Well today, while i was studiously going through my FSLI CD-ROM, Ivy said i looked like.... a Golliwog... while looking at my NZ pics...

Obviously, when i first heard it, i had no idea whether it was a good thing or a bad thing.. but with a name like Golliwog, i don't think it can be any good right? Hahaha... anyway during lunch i decided to consult Rey and Shumiin, and both of them started laughing... and concurred that i did look like one!!!! Argh... I was getting really curious then and when i went back, i got a link from Ivy showing me the pic of a Golliwog....

I mean like, WHAT THE HELL?!?!?! So THIS is a Golliwog?? Hahahaha... seems like its the hair that's the defining factor... and maybe the smile.. (even with braces man...) Other than that i don't think i'm as tanned or as fat... hee.. but it's still interesting if you come to think of it actually. It's a character from Enid Blyton's books ah... looking suspiciously like an Afro dude... On closer look it also looks like Ronald McDonald who's just survived a bomb attack on his restaurant.....

Funny thing about me and cartoons though... those of you who know me back in my SJI days will know that i always got teased about looking like Mr 7-UP himself....

I used to wear loose Ts and berms like Fido does... looking just as skinny and with the trademark spikey hair!! (Yes even at that age....) I dare say, i was probably as cool as him too.... hee....

Kinda fun having yourself associated with cartoonic icons don't you think?? Not everyone can make that easy claim to fame and looking like someone that's hand drawn.... For myself, i'm pretty fine with it.. as long as nobody tries to associate me with anything TOO ridiculous... In the meantime, i think i can rename this my GolliBLOG liao.... :P

Blade II

After pushing ourselves to the limit in Saturday's Street Soccer Tournament, we went one better on Sunday and went Rollerblading again!!! Same clique as the previous week, with the inclusion of my girlfriend Sharon, Lih Soon and his girl Elaine....

The day threatened to fall apart on us when we first reached East Coast though, with heavy rain accompanied with thunder and lightning the moment Sharon rented her blades.... Here we were stuck in a little shelter watching the day just go by us....

"Apparently Jo loves watching thunderstorms..." Posted by Hello

Amazingly though, the heavy rain lightened up after about 15 minutes, and we decided to give it a go-ahead even though it was still drizzling quite a bit!! The ground was slippery and our clothes were getting wet, but the rain wasn't gonna dampen our mood for the day!!! The initial part of the day was spent trying to get Sharon to move forward though, which really was a handful in itself. Couple that with the fact that the road was slippery and here you have a tough situation.. a newbie like me struggling to teach a first-timer.. hahahah...

"YES! She's done it! After 2 hours, she's able to.. STAND!" Posted by Hello

To Sharon's credit, we DID make it to the Hawker Centre at the end (although we took more than half an hour!!), and there we had our lunch and waited for the King of Lateness, Tan Lih Soon, himself to arrive with Elaine.... 2 hours past our meeting time. It started to rain again while we were eating, and we were stuck again for about half an hour, before the skies cleared and we proceeded back..

"The hawker centre food made us a li'l crazy..." Posted by Hello

"Better late than never.... Elaine and Soon..." Posted by Hello

Before long, we were back and ready to return Sharon's blades.. (supposed to be 2 hours but extended to a whopping 4!!). Jo also had to return his after he broke his bro's earlier in the day. Anyway me and Jo are planning to get new blades.. maybe somewhere around this week. Kinda cool to have blades we can call our own, and i'm pretty sure we'll be coming down quite often, coz we're hooked onto the sport! Sharon too.. although she spent the whole day and can now move as fast as i walk (an achievement in itself), she loves it and would be more than willing to try it again!!

Oh yes, and by the way, Rooney's a Red. : ) Posted by Hello

I hate PENALTIES!!!!

Argh... the PwC Street soccer tournament is finally over... and it HAD to come to this... penalties..... haiz haiz haiz.... feeling really disappointed that i didn't put mine away, and that was the reason why my team got 2nd today..... haiz...

Well the day started with anticipation and enthusiasm, as the rest of the team, just like me, were really looking forward to playing in the tournament for the past few weeks already. After all the talk about players, tactic, trophy celebrations, etc... it was finally down to the real thing. 5 group games were what we had to go through, 7 minutes each half and here's the lowdown on the games we played.

"The Great Reds!!!" Posted by Hello

Game 1
Our first game HAD to be against our own friends, Kelvin's Orange team. People whom we play with every week and that's why we regarded them as our toughest opponents. True enough, it was a very tight game, and they were really up for it. We were being pressed quite a bit in the first half and in the second, we started to get out of our shells, and managed to get the first goal. I was running down the right with Kelvin closing in and by some fluke chance, i managed to knock the ball in between his legs and passed it to Zul, who finished it easily. That set the tone and the pace increased, and on one of our breaks, substitute Talib finished brilliantly after a good pass from Zul. 2-0 was the scoreline.. a hard fought win which was the most important.

"Total football is what this team is all about..." Posted by Hello

Game 2
The next opponents were people wearing Hall 6 T-shirts... kinda ironic knowing that my hallmate Tom Chio was also in that team.. hahaha... From what we saw, they seemed the toughest of the rest of the teams and true enough, they were very organised and resilient... Their resolute defending ensured we didn't have many clear-cut chances against them and it ended 0-0... a bad result for Kelvin's team... argh... which ineveitably led to their knock-out...

Game 3
Next up was the tax team.... with their very own Zidane... a big dude who seemed pretty skillful with the ball but his pace (or rather lack of it) overshadowed whatever skill he had. It wasn't an easy game either actually, but we managed to steal a goal when Zul's snapshot volley beat the keeper... and then we spent the rest of the game defending like maniacs... we succeeded in the end and Rey got yet another clean sheet! 1-0 to the... erm... A2 team!

"The look of concentration... ONLY when GIRLS are playing." Posted by Hello

Game 4
This was our game against the A1s, and we knew we had to create more chances and score lots to ensure the Hall 6 Team wouldn't be able to catch up with us on goal difference if we did lose the last game. Knowing this, we really went flying off the blocks, hitting the post a few times within the first few minutes!! Unrelenting pressure from us and before long we were ahead, and scoring at will! In fact we scored so many that i almost lost count but i think i should roughly have the scorers here.... one own goal off a corner, a Steven "Fox-in-the-box" Chan special off a corner too, another from Talib who was starting to look like supersub Solksjaer, one from me after an amazing through ball from Zul, and lastly Zul himself with 2 well taken goals!! 6-0 and we were cruisin'!!!

Game 5
Our last group game, and it had to be against the Managers... haha... seemingly they weren't having too good a time there, losing all their games and not scoring a single goal! With that in mind, we were going to step down a gear and take it easy, but only AFTER we made sure we'd win this. I started the scoring after driving the ball into the bottom corner, and this was followed by another goal from Steven. In the second half then, we took it easy, resting by rolling our subs, and Rey got his chance to play outfield as a striker!! Ridiculous Rey then ran them ragged and displayed excellent finishing to get 2 goals in a matter of minutes!!! In between though, one of the managers, Winston, got a good shot in and Zul used his acting skills to the fullest to let the ball fly past in... we were true to our word and the managers got their goal!! Both of the teams were then happy to play it out, and it ended 4-1. On to the semis!!!

Semifinal
Our opponents... the admin team who came in runners-up last year. We knew they were quick and skillful but we also knew they were realy tired out from the group games. As such we started by taking it easy and trying to pass it around with lots of movement, tiring them out in the process. Patience paid off and we got the first goal from Zul after i ran into their half in a counter attack.... our 2nd goal came in the 2nd half when Zul played a neat one-two flick with me and i trapped the ball before toe poking it home. 2-0 and we had one foot in the finals!! They did give us a scare with a few good shots but with Yee Chung in spectacular form, there just wasn't going to be a way through for them. 2-0 the final score and one game to the trophy!!

Final
We didn't need to be told about who our opponents were. Yichi, Heng Lip, Chin Beng.... they all formed the core of the PwC soccer team and they were obviously favorites. We were undaunted though and brought the game to them, trying to create open spaces with quick movement and passing. As we started to get our rhythm though, some of their players started to get cramps and started limping around, before a tackle on Chin Beng from Zul ultimately put a temporary stop to the game. The game took some time before restarting and this rattled us a bit, and as a result, we were caught napping at a free kick and Chin Beng smashed it against the crossbar, stunning Rey in the process and leaving Hua Kai to tap in from close range, the FIRST goal he'd conceded in the whole tourney. We started the 2nd half determined to bring the game level but with our players starting to feel weary and Yichi's team smartly controlling possession, it almost looked like a lost hope but right in the last minute, a corner from me found its way to Steven again, and he placed it in the corner, hitting Talib along the way, and sending us and our fans (the Orange team) into raptures! 1-1!!! The final whistle blew almost immediately after kick-off and it was down to penalties.

Decision time, and it was agreed that i was to take the kick first, followed by Talib and then Yee Chung and with Zul as the goalie. Yichi got his first penalty in and then it was my turn. Now i am always confident in taking penalties and i have NEVER missed one for my hall. Here i was in front of the keeper, choosing my spot (left) and ready to kick... as i struck the ball though, i tried to get as much power as possible and this compromised the aiming (excooses).... the ball went dead centre and the keeper saved it... argh.. a moment that i'll remember forever. Subsequently, everyone got their penalties in and Heng Lip's team won 3-1. Yee Chung didn't even get the chance to take it and i have to take the blame for the suggy wuggy penalty.

On hindsight....
Thinking back on the day, the end result wasn't as good as we'd expected, but on the positive side, we lived up to our billing as favorites and gave Yichi's team a run for their money. Think i'll always remember it coming down to my penalty but i will never forget the hard work my teammates put in to make it such a successful tournament for us.

Zul, Steven, Chin Soon, Yee Chung, Rey, Weiren and Talib... THANKS so much for putting in your all today!!!

13 going on 30!!

Hah!! Finally... i get to watch a teen flick again after so long... ok not really a Teen Flick but rather a "mature" Teen Flick if u get my drift..... Last wed the free movies in store for the Singapore Film Society screening was AVP and 13 Going On 30!! Knowing that AVP the super monster comedy was watched and reviewed by me not too long ago, the obvious choice was to sit through this entertaining movie about growing old fast... WAAAAAAY too fast.

Jennifer Garner stars as a 13-year-old braces-wearing (YES just like me...) girl who gets turned into a 30-year-old overnight, after a birthday wish comes true. The film then goes to show how she comes to terms with being 30 and flirty!! We get to see her finding out what responsibilities u have as compared to being a teen, how people in the corporate world can back stab u all the time, how it feels to have Women Boobs, and all about the birds and the bees of course... ;)

I must say that this isn't the brainest movie i've seen for sure, but it's sure to bring a smile to your day because of it's lighthearted comedy and heartwarming scenes too. Sure it does get a bit predictable here and there, but i must say that Jennifer Garner (chio babe chio babe chio babe) stands out and makes this movie so watchable! Also have to look for Mr Smeagol himself (Andy Serkis) who puts in a very entertaining performance as a magazine editor-in-chief. I could've sworn he was Mr Bean in certain scenes....

Tim's Movie Rating - 13 Going on 30 ====> 3/5
Nice and cheery comedy about a girl who just reaches her teens, and then her 30s in just a day. Talk about looking too old for your age. Jenny Garner will keep up your level of interest in the film, and all of us who remember being young once before will enjoy watching her go through maturity in a flash!
